Auckland, 26fch October. A Wade storekeeper, named Richard Marsh, has been committed to the Asylum. The unfortunate man had taken great interest ia the Kelly prosecutions, and assisted materially iv bringing the smuggling cases forward which are now in the course of investigation at the Police Court, and these, it appears, have disordered his mind. A lumper named Henry Mitchell fell off the breastwork at the reclamation into tho Bea, and was sinking for the last time, when a dock fireman, named M'Donald, jumped over and rescued him. At first, Mitchell was though to be dead, but the reatorat^ye measures which were adopted succeeded in restoring him to life. Cary's "Pirates of Penzance" Company opened at the Theatre Royal to a good house. During the voyage of the Ringarooma from Napier to Auckland, thirty boxes of cigars (part of samples of a commercial traveller) were stolen. The police searched the vessel, and, up to her leaving to-night for Russell, discovered two boxes planted in the forecastle, which seems to indicate that some of the sailors are concerned in the affair. Tho value of the goods stolen is £15. This Day. Mr. Neil Lloyd, a rope manufacturer of 25 years' standing in the colony, died suddenly this morning. Westport, 26th October. Owing to a difference between the manager of the Westport Colliery Company and the colliers, on the point of ths length of notice required of intention to leave the works, the men are on strike. Coal has been struck in the Koranui drive. The company's works are progressing rapidly. Dunedin, £6th October. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day Mr. Mowat characterised Mr. Simpson's decision in a case as absurd and ridiculous, and when called on to retract, he said he alway« obeyed the Court, but had no respect for his Worship's judgment. On a retractation being again demanded, the remark was withdrawn. A boy, three years of age, a son of Mr. Martin, fell into the Taieri river on Tuesday, and was drowned. Timabu, 26th October. The annual Agricultural and Pastoral Association Show to-day wa3 a great success. The exhibits, both 'in quality and number, showed improvement on previous years The attendance was large, and the weather fine up to 4 o'clock. The total number of entries was 836. Wanganui, This T>ay. John Smith, charged with stealing a watch from the person of a sleeping man, was sentenced at the Supreme Court to-day to eighteen months' hard labour.
