London, I4th October. The Times has published an article calling attention to the mineral resources of Tasmania, which it speaks moat highly of. The East Coast of Scotland has been visited by severe storms. The steamer Liverpool and several boats were wrecked, and the telegraphs along the coasts were destroyed. A destructive waterspout has burst on Algeria, killing 65 persons and causing immense destruction of property. The arrest of Mr. Parnell and other Irish measures, coupled with the avowed determination of the Government to act with vigour in tho suppression of seditious disturbances, has oocasioned intense excitement in Dublin. The authorities are taking most stringent precautions to prevent any disorder. Mass meetings have been prohibited, and the streets are patrolled by cavalry, who have instructions to disperse any large assemblage. Serious disturbances have taken place in Cork and encounters have ensued between the population and the police. Mobs assembled in thousands and hooted the police, and subsequently pelted them with stones. Eventually the Constabulary found it necessary to fire on the crowd, and a number of persons were wounded. Very heavy weather has been experienced throug-hont Europe during the past week, which culminated in a series of most violent storms. From all parts of the Continent reports have been received of the damage inflicted, which in many districts is declared to be of a disastrous character. 19th October. The situation in the Transvaal is growing critical. The Boers are exhibiting a bitter feeling against all those suspected of sympathy wita the British, and the practice of " Boycotting" haa been applied to a number of English adherents, who were refused assistance of any kind from the Boers. The proposal for holdiug an International Exhibition in New York in 1883 having fallen through, owing to the apathy displayed, efforts are now being made to arrange for a "World's Fair" at Boston in 1885. The citizens there are very desirous of carrying the affair to a successful issue, and much enthusiasm is being displayed.
