DINNER TO MR. C. C. BOWEN.
A dinner to Mr. O. C. Bowen, late member for Kaiapoi, was given at Escort's Hotel, Bangiora, last night. Replying to the toaat of hia health, Mr. Bowen deprecated making Native matters a party question. The Government used the utmost patience in endeavouring to avoid war, and had a serious responsibility to secure the safety of tho3e who settled on the lands on the faith of the action of previous Governments. He felt certain that the colonists would not brook interference n the carrying out of tha Native policy from anyone, no matter how high his official position might be. He advocated the election of a Parliamentary Committee and a Financial Committee in the
House. Th's would be a saving to the , country, and much time also would be < spared. Business and private affairs compelled him to decline re-election. i
