GREAT CONSERVATIVE BANQCTET CONSERVATIVE REPUDIATION OF PROTECTION. THE POLITICAL STRUGGLE IN AMEBICA. London, 12th October. A banquet took place at Newcastle-on-Tyne last night under Conservative auspices. The Marquis of Salisbury, Sir Stafford Northcote, and other leader 3 of the patty were present, and spoke on the occasion. The Marquis of Salisbury, in hia speech, referred to the state of affairs in South Africa, and stated that ho was confident the Government would again have to " eat dirt " in the Transvaal. Sir Stafford Northcote spoke on the question of England's commercial relations with other Powers, and repudiated the idea that the Conservatives favoured the adoption of a policy of protection. The presence of a French man-of-war at Alexandria at the present juncture having caused some comment in political circles, it has been explained by the French authorities that the vessel i 3 merely making her usual periodical visit, and that her presence in Egyptian waters has no connection with recent events in that country. A sum of .£260,000 was to-day withdrawn from the Bank of England for Egypt. Washington, 12th October. The obstruction on the part of the Democratic senators having been withdrawn, the newly-elected Republican senator has been admitted, and has taken his seat in the Senate.
