WESLEY CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL.
» The anniversary of this Sunday School was celebrated last night by a tea and public meeting. A capitil repast was provided, to which nearly 400 persons sat down, the lady teachers presiding over the tables. Aftor tea a public meeting was held, the Rev. W. Kirk being in the chair. The secretary road the report, which dealt with the progress of tho school for a period of eighteen months. After some preliminary remarks, the report mentioned that a Band of Hope had been started in connection with tho school and was progressing satisfactorily. Seventy-five boys and girls had become members, and 25 boys had signed a declaration againat the use of tobacco. The meetings of the band were conducted by Mr. James Godber. The lady teachers and ladies belonging to the several Wesleyan Churches had decided to aid tho erection of a school-building in conneotion with the church, and with that object it had been arranged to hold a bazaar in the Arcade on the Ist, 2nd, and 3rd November next. At the present there were 430 children and 32 teachers on the rolls, the average attendance of the former being 280, and of the latter 27. The average increase since the last report was 53 scholars and 4 teachers. Since the foundation of the school 3525 had passed through it. The library wa3 supplied with 787 volumes. Illustrated papers to the nnmber of 300 were distributed every month. Thirty poundß had been subscribed by the school towards the Home Mission Fund during the eighteen months, and JJ9 was contributed on behalf of the widows of the late Revs J. B. Richardson and J. Armiiage, who perished during the wreck of the Tararua The treasurer's statement showed a small credit balance. The reporb having been adopted, addresses were delivered by the Revs. A. J. Smith, S. Griffiths, Mr. G. I iller, the superintendent of the school ; Mr. Moxham, and Mr. J. Dixon. It was reported that the^total receipts in connection with the anniversary amounted to Thanks were accorded to those friends who had aided the labours of the school, and the proceedings closed in the usual way.
