♦ [united press association.] Dunedin, 17fch September. Two local pedestrians, Drummond and Wanfield, had a 12 hours' go as-you-pleaae match in the open air on Saturday, for a-side. Drnmmond was seized with cramp internally for two hours after starting, but kept up for over nine hours, when he had to give in. Wanfield had done 54 miles. A case of considerable interest to shareholders in Building Societies was partly heard in the Kesident Magistrate's Court yesterday. H. Eose held shares to the value of .£lB3, and subsequnt to Webb's departure he withdrew them, receiving payment for the same. On the affairs of the company being investigated, it was found that there had been no profits made during the year preceding the sale. Webb's defalcations amounted to £2257, and in paying Mr. Kose these facts had not been taken into consideration. It was decided that the losses should be distributed pro rata among the shareholders, and defendant was requested to refund the excess he had received, or, in other words, to bear his portion of the loss. He declined, and hence the action. If the society succeeds a number of actions will be brought against other shareholders in the same position. This Day. A man named White, who had been missing for a month from Tairua, was found dead in the bnsh about a mile from the mill. He had been drinking. The steamer Tainui ran into the steamer Enterprise, smashing her counter, driving her under water, and carrying away her mast. The accident oocurrei through the engineer mistaking the captain's order to " go-astern " for " go-ah«;ad."
