Mr. Proßser proposed, and it was carried, " 1 hat the Chairman be requested to communicate with the Government, urging them to take immediate steps to carry out the recommendation of the Select Committee with regard to direct steam communication with England." Great indignation is expressed at the contemplated removal of Constable Gilleßpie. A monster petition wa3 signed last niarht, and the Borough Council has passed a unanimous resolution in commendation of the highly efficient manner in which the constable has discharged his duties during the last four years, and protesting against his removal.
