NEWS FROM AFGHANISTAN. | BETJTEB'S TELEGRAMS. | London, 2nd September. Consols have fallen \, and are quoted today at 99. New Zealand securities remain firm at the following quotations : — 5 per cent. 10-40 loan, 104 ; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 102J ; 4} per cent. 1879-1904 loan, 995. Prices in the wheat markets are declining, owing to finer weather. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, 575; New Zealand wheat, ex warehouse, 56s 6d ; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 41s 6d The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,730,000 quarters. Australian tallow has advanced Is per cwt Best beef, 37s ; best mutton, 393. The total fctock of tallow in London is 16,200 caska. Best Sydney copra, per ton, £14. At the wool sale to-day, 10,900 bales were catalogued. Sir Stafford Northcote made a speech today at Sheffield, in the coursa of which he took occasion to emphasize the importance of maintaining the existing union between England and the colonies. The election of a member for North Durham, which took place today, resulted in the return of Mr Elliott, a Conservative candidate, in the room of Lientonant-Colonel Joioey, the deceased Liberal representative. Calcutta, 3rd September. The latest telegram received by the Government of India from Afghanistan reports that Ayoub Khan waß, on the 30th August, still in the neighbourhood of the City of Candahar, and had made no movement towards opposing the advance of the Ameer's forces from Khelat-i-Ghilzai.
