The Paris water supply, which is usually pure and abundant, shows signs of exhaustion, and the city is threatened with a water famine. Following up the despatch of the Turkish squadron to Tripoli, the Sultan has now ordered troops to be sent to that place. 21st July. Hessy Helfman, the Russian Jewess, who was convicted and sentenced to death for complicity in the assassination of the late Emperor of Russia, and subsequently temporarily reprievedthrough being encieinte,haa had the sentence of death commuted to penal servitude for life. The death is announced of Canon Ridgway. The United States Government has accepted the surrender of Sitting Bull, the famous chief of the Sioux tribe of Indians. The city of Geneva, in Switzerland, has been visited by.an earthquake. 23rd July. The contest between the President of the United States and Senator Conkling, with regard to the exercise of Federal patronage, has terminated, and Senator Conkling has resigned his position as Senator for the State of New York in consequence. The result has been that Mr. Lapham has been elected to the vacant seat in the Senate. The prospectus has been issued of a company called " Robert Campbell and Sons, Limited," with a capital of .£600,000, with the object of purchasing land aud further developing sheep-farming in New Zealand. 26th July. It i 3 now believed that the infernal machines seized by the authorities at Liverpool wore intended to be placed in the vaults of the House of Commoiis The remains of the late Dean Stanley have been interred in Henry the Seventh's Chapel, Westminster Abbey. The funeral ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by Canon Jennings and Canon Protharo. Among other distinguished mourner 3, there were present the Prince of Wales, Mr. Gladstone, Cardinal Manning, Professor Tyndall, and the Bishop of Tasmania.
