At an inquest on the fire at Mr. Jago's house, the jury returned a verdiot that it was accidentally caused. It was sought to be shown that a case of jewellery insured in the Liverpool and London Office for £100 had not been burnt, and Mr. Jago aud his son both agreed that the hoat was not sufficient to destroy the jewellery, bnt both swore to not having been able to find it, or any trace of it since the fire. Auckland, sth July. John Oluf Peterson, of Manga wai, was drowned by falling into the water while in an opileDtic fit. This Dat. The meeting of Middle Island natives was concluded to-day at Waitaki. Resolutions were passed re the native grievances for transmission to tho Government and Taiaroa. Several etses of measles have appeared amongst the children attending the Koraan Catholic school at Lyttelton, and they have led to the closing of the school for a fortnight. Dunedin, sth July. Mr Dymock has been promoted to be Chief Inspector of the National Bank, whose head quarters are now in Dunedin. Mr. Young has been appointed Dunedin manager. A resident of Invercargill was fined £5 today for drunkenness in a railway carriage. It is stated that the accused is a member of the Licensing Bench, This DAr. The petitioners in Moritzon's ease have been informed that the Governor cannot consider it so long as the case is before the Supreme Court, but when the charges are dealt with the petition will be considered. The good accounts from the Cape diamond Selds of the prospects there, have inluced six of the Dunedin police force to send in their resignations.
