INSURRECTION IN MACEDON. FURTHER AGRARIAN OUTRAGES. [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AKGUS.J London, 9th May. Cardinal Manning 1 , Archbishop of Westminster, has expressed his disapproval of the meetings of the Irish Land League. Mr. Grant Duff, Under-Seoretary for the Colonies, replying to a question put by Mr. Summers, member for Stalybridge, said that when the attention of the Colonial Office had been directed to outrages by whites in the South Pacific, the Secretary of State for the Colonies had asked for information from the Missionary Societies. He added that missionaries should report all outrageß within their knowledge to the naval authorities on the Australian station or to the High Commissioner for the Pacific. The Christian population of Korilscha, Macedon, have rebelled. An engagement has taken place between the insurgents and the Turks, in which the latter were defeated. Mr. Wm. Anderson Ogg, of the firm of Australian merchants, Ogg and Co., has been chosen Sheriff of London. 12th May. The French threaten to occupy Tunis directly any Turkish vessels appear at La Gole^, the port of the capital. The Bey of Tunis has telegraphed to Earl Granville, the Foreign Secretary of State, that the position is critical, and he asks England and the other European Powers to interfere and compel France to declare her intentions. Her Majesty has held a review of troops at the camp at Aldershot, and there was a largo muster. Her Majesty was received by Sir Daniel Lysons, the general in command at the camp, who was attended by a brilliant staff. An election has taken place for Knaresborough, Yorkshire, the Beat for which has been vacant eince July, 1880, when Sir Henry Thompson, who was elected in the Liberal interest, was unseated on petition. The election has resulted in favor of a Conservative candidate. Hefferman, a prominent member of the Land League, Cork, and four others have been arrested and lodged in gaol. Further agrarian outrages are reported in Ireland, and Lord Dunolly's bailiff has been shot.
