At the Supremo Court yesterday, Wilkinson* charged with ombozzling monies belonging to tno Government, at Hawera, was again arraigned on- a second charge. Tho trial lasted the wholo day, and at about 9 o'clock last evening tho jury retired, and ftftor 20 minutes consideration, returned with a verdict- of guilty, bnt recommended prisoner" to mercy <• on tbo ground that the Government wore* principally to blame for appointing a man like tho prisoner, who appeared to have no knowlodgo of accounts* with a small salary, as receiver of revenue, when such a large amount as over had to pass through his hands. Judge Richmond sentenced the prisoner to fivo years* penal servitude.
