* THE ACCIDENT TO A BALLOONIST. [UNITED PEKBB ASSOCIATION. ] Sydney 17th March. The accident which befell L'Estrantre, the balloonist, was productive of more serious coHsequences than was generally known at the time. When the balloon burst, Mrs. Hawke's daughter was standing on a verandah within a few yards, and the explosion knocked her down with great force. On being picked np and taken inside, it was also found that Mrs. Hawke, who is an elderly lady, was severely burnt on the face, the skin of the right side being charred and her eye severely injured. She is not expected to recover her sight. Miss Hawke was slightly burned, but suffers most from the shook to her system. Melbourne, 17th March. Perett, the deaf mute, who was sentenced to death for rape, has had the Benteaoe mitigated to fiva years' imprisonment. Mr. Qrainger, architect and civil engineer, has been entrusted with the preparation of plans and specifications of a new bridge over the Yarra, to cost £93 000. Joseph Wilson, who was nearly murdered by a fellow-workman, Thomas Churohill, near Berrier, lies in a preoarious condition at the Alfred Hospital. Churchill is in custody. Mdlle. Charbonnet has recovered damages from the Allan Company for breach of contract in regard to playing their piano at the Exhibition concert. The contract was broken owing to a musical dispute The Hon. Mr. Langridge intimates that he has under consideration the propriety of introducing here the system adopted in England of issuing oards tor stamps to be pasted upon, the stamps to be received at the Savings Banks as money, but he admitted there were great difficulties in tho way. Brisbane, 17th March. In the case Queensland National Bank against the A.&.N. Co , tho jury returned a verdict for plaintiffs for .£404 11s 4d, the value of gold lost from one of the company's steamers.
