THE NEWLY-DISCOVERED QUARTZREEF AT TERAWHITI.

At the meeting of the Philosopical Society on Saturday evening, Dr. Hector referred to the specimens of gold-bearing quartz obtained by him from Terawhiti two days previously. He said a reef had been found in a fresh locality by some bushburners under totally different circumstances from the old so-called reefs, and the formation was quite different from that at the old workings . The new reef was at right angles to the old ones, and the specimens, which showed gold freely, contained at the rate of about three ounces to the ton. He looked upon the discovery as most encouraging, and he thought there was now a better prospect than ever of definitely testing whether there was payable gold at Terawhiti. When he obtained the specimen, he could see instantly the stone was of a totally different class from anything previously obtained from the locality. It was exactly similar to that at Golden Bay, and the reef at Terawhiti was in a line with the reefs at the former place. The discovery was on freehold ground, but he understood the owner (Mr. M'Manaman) was willing to allow mining operations to be carried on.
