MESSRS. PLIMMER, REEVES & CO.'S " AUDACITY."
TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING rOST. Sib— Some men seek earnestly after popularity ; others havo it thrust upon thorn. Meßsrs. Plimmer, Reeves and Co. aro under great obligations to Mr. Fisher for tho high compliment he paid thorn at tho last City Council mooting. Theso are his words :—: — " Plimmer, Reeves and Co. aro tho most audacious mon in town." Sir, will you be kind enough to inform Mr. Fislior, that Mr. Plimmer, tho head of tho firm, has done •many audacious things within the last forty years in Wellington? Twenty-seven years ago he had the audacity to purchase the Ark and build the wharf ; not content with that, ho reclaimed about an acre of land from the bay. He then had tho audacity to measure the water whero all the now Reclaimed Land is, to calculate its cost, and persuade Sir Georgo Grey to undertake to reclaim it, for which service tho Governor promised him a grant of what he had reclamed, but he forgot to perform what he promised (as usual), whereby Mr. Plimmer lost about £3000, but Sir Goorge did make an excuse, and Baid ho was sorry for his forgetfolness, and left me in quiet possession, and all succeeding Government havo done the samo. Thero aro many moro audacious things Mr. Plimmer has dono in Wellington, and ho is trying at present to do a very audacious action, that is to oonnoot Wellington and Manawatu by tho North Island West Coast Railway, and he hopos, with tho support of tho good people of Wellington, to accomplish this ; Jast, and worst of all, lie has the audacity to be one of the largest ratepayers in Wellington. lam exceedingly obliged to Mr. Fishor, it is so seldom that people pay mo any compliment ; bnt to bo the most audacious man in Wellington, is to bo the most popular one. lam, Ac, John Flimsier.
