The Hon. Mr. Bryce left for Christohurch this morning. The Hon. Mr. Oliver was able to attend at his office to-day. At the Caledonian sports to-day, E. Blackburn was the winner in the competition for the championship of wrestling, border style, throwing W. Hudson in the hist round. In the Supreme Court to-day, John Christie, charged with horse-stealing, was found not guilty. Walter Rice, for embezzlement of a valuable security, was found guilty, and remanded for sentence pending the decision of the Court of Appeal on points raised. THts Dat. At the Supreme Court to-day, the following sentences were passed : — John Gately, for larceny, three years ; Robert Muir, for forgery, eighteen months ; William Adams, for forgery, four years. Chbistchubch, sth January. Recent agitation about the Akaroa Railway has produced some effect, as a reply has been received from the Government stating that the line will be carried on so far as the Parliamentary vote permits. Walter Gibßon was committed for trial today on a charge of murdering Kerisone, at Prebbleton, and will bo tried to-morrow. This Dat. The trial of Gibson for the murder of Kerrisone is fixed for Monday next. Beautiful weather is prevailing for the harvest, which promises to be very satisfactory. A deputation, including the Major of Greymouth, waited on the Premier this morning in reference to the construction of a railway to the West Coast. They explained that they proposed to undertake the work provided the Government would make a grant of land on the line of railway. The Premier promised to lay the matter before the Government at the earliest opportunity. A new weekly society journal, called "Liberty," is announced to appear on Saturday next. Several tradesmen have offered trophies in connection with the cricket match, Australian Eleven v. Canterbury. A suspicious fire occurrel at Papanui last night. An unfinished house was destroyed. It was insured for £400 in the National Office. An enquiry is to be held. Hokitika, sth January. Robert Armstrong, a miner, has been missing since Monday last. The police and about; a hundred miners are searching for him in the neighborhood of the Big Paddock, where he was seen hist. It is supposed he has fallen down an abandoned shaft. Auckland, Sth January. Joe, the Fiji murderer, has got quite fat and sleek in Mount Eden Gaol, and haa obtained the sobriquet of " Happy." At Tattersall's many sums of money changed hands, and engagements were promptly kept on the whole in settling up on the races, although some leading bookmakers are said to be pretty heavily struck. The shipping generally lying alongside Queen-street Wharf, and the steamer Arawata in particular, were gaily decked out in bunting to-day, in honor of the marriage of Mr. David Mills (manager of the Union Steamship Company, Wellington), to Misa Macf arlane, daughter of Mr. Thomas Macfarlane, Provisional Trustee in Bankruptcy and Curator of Intestate Estates.
