MELBOURNE EXHIBITION AWARDS AND HONOURS FOR NEW ZEALAND. [reuter's telegrams.]
Melboubne, sth January. 3103 Exhibition awards have been made. The following belong to New Zealand : — First prize, four pieces kauri timber, Hokianga Sawmill Company. Second — Specimens of Australian and New Zealand timber, showing action of " Teredo navalis," and specimens of totara and jar rah timbers, Auckland Harbour Board; collection of timbers, showing results of experiments for determining strength, Colonial Museum, Wellington; large collection of timbers of Canterbury and Westland, Professor Julius yon Haast, Canterbury Museum ; eight specimens of native ornamental woods, F. Halcombe, Feilding, Wellington ; two planks of rimu (polished), John Hornby, of Mount Pleasant Mills, Picton; fine specimen kauri timber, New Zealand Commissioners, Wellington. Thirds — Thirtyone samples polished and named timbers, grown in New Zealand, chiefly in the neighborhood of Dunedin, Robert Guthrie, Dunedin ; speoimens of large kauri timber, grown in New Zealand, G. Holdship, Auckland; sixteen varieties of ornamental timbers, from New Zealand forests, Wm. Nome, cabinetmaker, Auckland; specimens of native timber of Otago, a portion of totara log worked with stone adzes, from the Maori fish weir, Shag River, Otago Museum, Dunedin; specimens of Southland timber, R. and A. Lapper, Invercargill. Taranaki iron sand, in its various stageß of manufacture, E. M. Smithy New Plymouth. Fourths — Sample of board, of .kabikatea, Bagnall Bros, and Co., Thames ; polished and framed samples of New Zealand woods, W. N. Blair, Engineer-in-Chief of South Island, Dunedin; two slabs of kauri pine, Dr. Logan Campbell, of Auckland, and W. Cuming, of Hokitika; block totara wood, suitable for veneering and cabinet work, John George Denne, Nelson; plank of yellow pine timber, John Fletcher, Pakahawa, Collingwood, Nelson ; specimens of New Zealand woods, polished on face, rough at back, J. C. George, Taranaki ; specimens of timber from Westland, Hokitika Local Committee ; samples of birch and totara, J. W. Robertson and Co., Queenstown, Otago ; veneers of colonial woods, Robert Stone, Thames ; twenty specimens of New Zealand timber and bark for tanning, Wilding and Ball, Waipukurau, Napier. Fifths. — Section of stump of flowering fuchsia tree, 65in. in circumference, John Beckenham, Nelson ; rough piece of kauri timber, showing the natural formation of kauri gum, Edward Isaacs, Eden Crescent, Auckland, and M'Connell, of Hokitika. The wool exhibits at the International Exhibition were opened to-day. They were scarcely sufficiently representative, there being only a few from New Zealand. 10 p.m. At the wool show the qualities exhibited are unsurpassed, and the experts find it most difficult to determine which is the best.
