THE WELLINGTON HOSPITAL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST. Siß^-Who is "Morgan S. Grace," who has come forward as the champion of the honorary medical staff of the Hospital. It surely cannot be the Honorable M.D. of Jena, who is a member of that staff, or he must Btrangely have forgotten one of the leading principles inculcated at that famous University, that self praise is no recommendation. The ratepayers know well that while the Hospital was under the direction of Dr. Johnston, as Provincial Surgeon, and Dr. Keating first and Dr. Gillon subsequently, as .Resident Surgeon, it cost very much less than it does now, in proportion to the number of patients, while it has yet to be shown that the real efficiency is greater. ! " Morgan S. Grace's" letter is a most ungenerous one towards both Drs. Johnston and Gillon. When those gentlemen had charge they were responsible for what they did and for what they spent. Now the honorary medical staff spend what they like of the ratepayers' money, and no one is responsible, not even when they experiment at the cost of the patients and the ratepayers with quack medicines. I have observed throughout New Zealand that honorary medical staffs always lead to rows and extravagance, and the sooner the Wellington one is abolished and the control of all expenditure placed in the hands of a responsible officer instead of an honorary and, therefore, irresponsible staff, the better for the patients and the public. I am, &c, A Ratepayer.
