FIRE AT THE PRISON.

An outbreak of fire took place to-day, which threatened at ono time tbe destruction of the Mount Cook prison. About holf-prst twelve o'clock a cauldren of pitch, which was toing boiled in a shoemaker's shop just outsido the stockade, was upset, and in a moment the place was in flames. Mr. James Mackay, Mr. Wallace, and some other gentlemen who were in Mr. Mackay's office, rushed out on seeing the clouds of black smoke, and at once applfoa the hoso which h kept on the promises. Although tbe force of water wp« very deficient, their efforts were successful in subduing tho flames before they had s oread to the adjoining buildings. The damage d6no to the shop will render it necessary to rebuild it, aud several men's clothes, &c , were destroyed.
