A dispatch, referring to the floods, from Ostiglia says that the whole course of the Nuncio below Mantua is lined with vast lagooos. The greatest damage is at Matara, 15 miles below Mantua, where the Po has formed a lake 20 miles long a> d 10 miles wide. The inhabitants of the flooded districts are encamped on the embankments. Thousands of acres of vines on which the grapes were ripe were ruined. The pecuniary loss exceeds that of the great floods of 1872. Several thousands of people were rendered homeless by the inundation of the River Po A letter written by the Pope has been published deploring the new civil marriage law, and denying that the Church desires to encroach upon the prerogatives of the State, but declaring that purely civil marriages are destitute of honest or sacred bonds.
