THE SEAMEN'S STRIKE.
• ¦? We mentioned ia our last issue that the seamen and others belonging to the steamera Rangatira, Huia, and Tui had struck work ia consequence of their employers having resolved to reduce their wages. Tii6 proposal of the employers vras to reduce the wages of the ordinary hands from £7 to £6 per month, and a proportionate reduction was to be made in the pay of the engineers and firemen; aud the men, objecting to this, struck work. This morning, however, tho ordinary hands resumed work at the reduced rate of wages, but. the engineers and firemen would not do so, and as it was absolutely necessary tbat they should bo ou board tue boats, the redaction la their c&so was not pressed, and they were taken on again at the old rate of pay. When the men struck yesterday a number of others immediately shipped at the reduced rate, and had not the police appeared on the scene there would probably have been a disturbance ; as it was, those who struck hooted the new men. Tho crowd which had gathered, however, was quickly dispersed by Sergeant Anderson and some constables.
