On Monday morning there was a great demonstration of tho unemployed iv front of the Government Offices, and a deputation interviewed Mr. Berry, aud presented a petition signed by- over 3000 persons seeking relief. Mr. Berry complained that the practical effect of theiV friendly deputations was to injure the party ia power, while tho existing Government had done all ia its power by the judicious expenditure of ita resources, to make the whole community prosperous. There was the same proportion oi' uuemployed in other colonies, but as only Conservatives were in power there was nothing said about it ia the press. He promised to consult his colloagues, and to appoint a board to report ou the best means of relief. In Adelaide, also, the Government have had to find work for the uuemployed ou the railways. The weather has been very cold, and ice prevailed in many parts of the colony. TheAustruliau and European Bank opened its doors last Saturday morning, ai'tor the temporary stoppage, and the number of withdrawis was not beyond the ordinary daily average. A number ot tbe branches ate shortly to be closed. The affairs of the Provincial and Suburban Bank have come before the Equity Court ia due form again. On an application ior winding* up, the application was dismissed on a technical point, but is to be renewed by another creditor. Sir George Stephen died on ' Sunday, aged 86. He had not practised at ttie Bar tor many years He was father of Judge Stephens. The new Victorian Insurance Company has been successfully floated, the whole ot the 100,000 shares having been taken up. lhe Kelly gang seem to bs again quite lost sight of, and nothing more has been heard about them. The prosecution of Weiberg and Pearce for robbery of 5000 sovereigns is proceeding, the prisoners being remanded till next week. A very narrow escape from a serious railway accident occurred on the single Hue of rails near Esseudon. Jt was only averted by the coolness aud presence ot' mind of the stationmistress, who managed to stop the train just in time to prevent a collision. Business is improving. The certificate of Captain Sliand, of the Loch Linube, lately from Glasgow, has been suspended for six months for drunkenness and misconduct. , - An extraordinary story i»" published to-day of a member of the Assembly having attempted to garrot a doctor in Carlton on Sunday night. A summons has been taken out against the member.
