RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. THIS DAY. (Before Mr. Manaford, R.M.)
INBBRIBTY. James M'Kean, an old soldier possessed of three medals, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness. Sergeant Anderson stated thai M'Kean was fined 53 yesterday for drunkenness, and since then had drawn about £5 pension money, of which he had only 6s 6d left. Mr. Mansford reprimanded- *ho delinquent, and expressed regret that a man who had evidently conducted himself gallantly inthe service of his country should squander his money in debaucheries He had no desire to deprive him of the few shillings he had left, bo would discharge him with a caution. James Allen, a decrepid old man who had got intoxicated while on a message for the Hospital authorities, of which institution he was an in-door patient, was, at the direction of Mr. Mansford, discharged and sent back to the Hospital in charge of a constable. James Sparrow, charged with drunkenness, pleaded guilty, and was fined ss, or in default 24 hours imprisonment. BRUTAL ABBATJLT. James Shearer, charged with assaulting and wounding Rebecca Stewart, pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Anderson handed a letter from the resident surgeon of the Hospital— stating that the unfortunate woman, Rebecca StewarJ:, came to the Hospital on the Ist inst., suffering from a severe contusion of the left leg, and that it would be impossible for her to appear — to Mr. Mansfovd, and requested tbat the case might be remauded for one week. The cue was accordingly remanded for one week. A SOCIAL BYIL. Mary Ann Nugent, who bad been remanded that enquiries might be instituted regarding her statements, was then placed in the dock. Mr. Mansford said tbat he bad seen Miss Greenwood and the Rev. Mr. West, who had giten him a full account of the efforts that had been made to reclaim her, and expressed his belief that she was past redemption. He should therefore send her to gaol for six months with hard labor. WITHDBAVS. Sergeant Anderson withdrew the charge against Richard Wood, of obtaining goods under false pretences.
