"Sinbad," in the Weekly Post, says:— "Mr. Ray has disposed of Insolvent (late Bide-a-Wee) and Sinking Fund to Mason and Vallance, under whose care the two burses will undergo their preparation for the Metropolitan meeting. Sinking Fund has been turned out now ior several month?, and Insolvent has not been in work since the commencement of last season." At the quarterly meeting of the Christchurch Fire Brigade to-day the report stated that the number of fires attended during the quarter was ten. At the nomination for the Southern Maori Electoral District to-day the following were proposed.: — Ihaia Tainui, the Hon. Faratene, and Tare Teihoka. The show of hands was In favor of the last-named candidate. There was no speechifying. The poll takes place on the 7th of July. A very largely attended meeting was held to-night of the New Zealand Railway Employes Benefit Society, Mr. Conyers in tho chair. The report of the committee was very satisfactory, notwithstanding the losses to which the society whs put in the early stages of its existence, ft was stated that tbe amount of arrears was very considerable, and it was suggested that the subscriptions should in future be stopped out of tbe men's wages. The Commissioner Btrongly recommended an amalgamation of the Otago and Canterbury societies, which he said there woulu be no difficulty in effecting.
