EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the Education Board was held to-day. There were present Mr. C. J. Pharazyn (in the chair), Yen. Archdeacon Stock, Rev. J. PatersoD, Messrs. Beetham, Hutchison, Bunny, Toomatb, and C. Pharazya. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed. FINANCIAL. The Chairman reported that since last month payments to the amount of £2574 had been mads. The balance in bank was stated to be £3140, and the amount available for new buildings was £4180. It was estimated that there would be a deficiency of £8000. A lengthy discussion took place on the question "which of the school houses required suould be erected first. It was decided " That until authority is received from the Minister for Education no tenders be accepted for tbe erection of any building in excess of the amount now shown to be available for expenditure to 30 h June, 1880." It was then resolved that the Newtown, Te Aro, aDd Thorndon schools should be built with the money at present in hand, the work to be begun as soon as possible. Mr. Hutchison objected to any schools being selected for erection first. He pointed out that a large number of schools were required, and that it was unfair to favor any particular district. TEBBACB SCHOOL. The Rev. J. Patbbson moved, "That having received an application from tbe Terrace School Committee to form the Terrace School into a District High School, the Board approve of, and agree to the application of the Committee, subject to tbe sanction of the Minister of Education, in terms of section 53, of the Education Act." He was of opinion that the Board should give the best education it could in the primary schools, but he thought at the same time that there should be something between tbe primary schools and the college. There should be a school in which they might]get some knowlenge of the classics, and they would have thin if the motion were earned. Mr. Hutchibo* seconded the motion. Toe Chaibman believed that the Minister for Education would not agree to this. After a desultory conversation, the motion was put and lost by a majority of 5 to 3. j NOKMAL SCHOOL. j Mr. Bbbthah moved— "That immediate action ba taken to provide normal education within the educational district of Wellington." He stid that the Board could get £2000 from the Government for the purpose of forming a normal school. He thought the matter should be referred to tbe Building Committee and the Inspector. The motion was agreed to, and tbe matter was referred to a committee consisting of Messrs Hutchison, Beotham, Toomath, C. J. Pharazyn, and Gisborne. COMPBTITIYB DESIGNS. On the motion of Mr. Beetham it was resolved, that the resolution ordering competitive designs Bhould be called for previous to the erection of new school buildings should be rescinded.
