THE STEAMER PATEA AN D CUTTER ANNIE ASHORE AT WANGANUI. (Wanganui Herald, 21st June.)

Considerable excitement was caused in town this morning, by the report of the tit. Kilda, that a steamer and cutter were asbore when ihe entered the river last night. Owing to the tempestuous weather and the darkness of the night, the St. Kiida had all she cou'd do to tike care of herself, and was unable to render any assistance. As soon as the tide nerved this morning, the Manawatu, Captain Harvey, steamed down the river, and returned shortly alter 1 o'clock with the Intelligence that the steamer was the Patea. It appears that tbe Patea was forced by stress of weather to run into the river for shelter, but owing to the difficulty of navigation in the heavy set which was running, she turned round too sharp, and got aground on the North Spit, inside the bar. The captain of the Patea says that he is in no danger, has not sustained any damage, and will be able to get off on tonigfars tide [The Manawatu arrived in Wellißgton this morning and reports the Patea still ashore yesterday, but not damaged in any way. Sbe lies on a soft sandy bottom.] The cutter Annie ha<? been less fortunate, she ran ashore in the darkness last night, on theJVorth Spit, close under the Castle Cliff, in the tame place where the old Fawn ran aground. Tbe heavy sea was too much for her, and the Manawatu reports her under water, and a total wreck All hands got safo to land. The Annie was from Auckland, with a cargo of drain pipes and blasting powder.
