By midnight on Saturday aU tbe vessels at Lytteiton except the barque Bella were safe Shortly after one o'clock the stern of the Bella struck, smashing her rudder, and at four o'clock the water had risen four feet In her hold. The crew worked at the pumps, but at ¦evon p tn the vessel s'unp her bead outwards, aud without any warning, seemed to slip off, nd sink. The crew took refuge in the mlzen Egging, A boit from the Mary Blair rescued all hands. The Bella wbs owned by Captain Turner, and Was a wooden vessel. She was Insured for L2OOO, and the cargo for £1000, in the New Zealand Insurance Company. She te now in about 16ft. of water. The gale was something unprecedented.
