CHRISTCHURCH. 20th June.
During the last two days evidence has been taken by the Collector of Customs and nautical a«sesors as to the cause of the collision between the Harbor Board steam barge and the barque Rialto, as the latter was entering the harbor •n Monday. The decision has not yet been given. A meeting of tbe clergy of the Church of England, including the Bishop, was held this afternoon for the consideration of the question ef establishing a Benevolent Society. The proceedings were purely preliminary, and of a private nature. Mr. and Mrs. Hoskins have forwarded a cheque for five guineas to the Fire Brigade for their exertions at the fire at his cottage on Tuesday. This Day. The ships Red Gauntlet and Oakhurst, which arrived this week from England, are reported to be ashore on tha Forty-Mile Beach. There is a heavy south-west gale, and torrents of rain and hail are falling. The rivers are brimful, but no other material damage is reported as yet. A prisoner named Brown, committed for three months for vagrancy, was found dead in bed this morning in gaol.
