At the inquest on tbe fire at Custom Housestreet, in H. B. Morton's premises, the jury to-day returned a verdict that the fire broke out in the rear of the first floor, but there was no evidence sufficient to show how it had its origin. During the examination Mr. Pierce, manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company , having elicited the fact that the police broke into the premises when they believed persons were sleeping within, commented on the fact tbat the admission of air is a frequent cause of fire spreading, which might otherwise be easily extinguished without doing extensive damage A young man named Charles Goodwill, while out shooting, was ramming a charge in a gun which was already capped, when the charge exploded, blowing the ramrod through his hand. One finger was amputated, and tbe patient is doing well. On the occasion of a recent marriage some one hoaxed a large number of people by issuing bogus invitations. At the Police Court to-day Captain Ulack, of the Loch Dee, was fined 40s for assault on a seaman.
