THE UNEMPLOYED OF CHRISTCHURCH.
(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Christchukch, 23rd May.
At a joint meeting to-night of the Sydenham Borougfc,Councii and Christchurch City Council the following resolution was carried : — "That in the opinion of the City Council of Christchurch and tbe Council of Sydenham in joint Council assembled, it is urgently and essentially necessary that employment be immediately provided in the said borough for destitute workmen, and that the joint Councils being willing to vote the sum of £500 each, the Government be respectfully requested to subsidise tbo amount by voting a Mlia of £1000, these amounts to be expcuviui ia channelling, forming, and metalling the south sides of tbe south town belt and other necessary works which are urgently needed, and sanitary measures." A meeting to take into consideration the case of the unemployed will be held ou Wednesday, in the Odd Fellows' Hall.
