SPECIAL CABLE NEWS TO THE "POST."

FROM OUR SPECIAL LONDON CORRESPONDENT. PEACE WITH AFGHANISTAN ASdUfLED. THE RUSSIANS IN ASIA. GREAT DEFEAT OF THE MERV EXPEDITION. THE WHEAT AND WOOL MARKETS. LONDON. 19th May. A early peace with Afghanistan is now practically assured, Yakoob Khan having agreed to a basis of a treaty, which is deemed satisfactory. Frederick Caviil, the swimming hero, who swam across the English channel, is about to visit Auckland. The Russian expedition, comprising a force of 20,000 men, sent to occupy Merv in consequence of the action of the English with regard to Afghanistan, and intended in some measure to counterbalance the preponderance of power obtained in that part of Asia by the British, has t met with a signal defeat and a severe check. They had crossed the Caspian Sea, and marched for a considerable distance towards Merv without meeting with any opposition. They then encountered a strong force of Turkomans, and a sanguinary battle ensued. Eventually the Russians were completely routed, and retired in disorder. Australian wheat is selling at the ship* side at 48s per 4801bs. Flour is selling at 325. Prices in the wool market continue very firm. At to-day's sale 9936 bales were Catalogued.
