"EASBY TO BE COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.",
TO THB BDITOR OF THB BVBNINO POST. Sir— On Saturday, In passing the establishment of Messrs. Curie, Anderson and Anderson (one of the partners of which firm had just been committed for tri»l for a violent assault on Mr. Easby). my attention was drawn to a large bill. ■ conspicuously posted in the window of the sain firm, with the words " Easby to be committed for trial " written in large letters on It. Now, sir, as I was in. Court when Mr. Mansford adjourned the case, I hope you will let me give you the substance ot what actually took place, so as to foil the base attempt made to injure the unfortunate man Easby in the eyes of his fellows. When Anderson had given his evidence, Mr. Mansford, before hearing the evldecce for the defence, intimated his intention of sending Easby for trial, and hid tho charge read over to him. Mr. Stafford, defendant's counsel, immediately protested, and said he was prepared to go on with the case, having strong evidence for the defence. Mr. Mansford said be would hoar any evidence Mr. Stafford had to bring, saying at the same time that although the charge had been read over it was not necessary that he should commit him (defendant), and adjourned the case until Tuesday. These, sir, are the simple facts of the case. I am, &c, Spectator. Wellington, 19th May, 1879.
