THE BOGUS TELEGRAM TRAP.

We received to-day a cable message from Mr. Haynes, Editor of the Sydney Evening News, one of our partners in the Special Cable enterprise, in reference to the " bogus " telegram about Sir Julius Vogel, which was published in Sydney as a trap to detect tiw : unscrupulous journals which were in the habit of stealing our special messages and publishing : them as from their " own London correspondent.'' They were "caught redhanded," and endeavoured to trump up a highly improbable story, that the " trap " telegram used as a marked shilling never was published in Australia at all. The telegram from Mr. Haynes, to whom the " bogus " message was sent I from Auckland by Mr. Brett, c jmpletely de- ; molishes this very transparent device, and ! explains extctly how the cable thieves were trapped. What professes to be a copy of Mr. Haynes's telegram appears in a morning conI temporary, but in such an extraordinarily mutilated and "topsy turvey" form as to be quite unintelligible. The correct telegram 13 &3 tollows : — "Sydney, 7th May. "TheN.Z. papers containing articles rela* tive to the cable thieving have been received, and are causing intense merriment. The ] 'Vogel telegram' was not printed ia the Evening Ne?~a owing to its being false, but - was issued by me as an ' extraordinary,' of ' which 100 slips were printed and issued just at the time the cable thieves reached our office. lam glad that it succeeded. The j statement about ' forgery ' is transparentCopies of the slips are posted to you with full details. You can publish tbis with my name attached. " Haynbs.".
