DUNEDIN. 31st March.

A carpenter named Maddon, lately carrying on business at Ashburton, was arrested at Duuedin this morning on warrant, charged with attempting to defraud his creditors. He was forwarded to Ashburton at once, ia charge of Detective Neil of that place. The Suez mail was delivered in town this evening, being eight days in advance of contract time. Fourteen claims have been made against the Corporation for damage done by the recent floods. The following is the calendar of prisoners for trial at the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court, commencing on Monday next, the 7th instant, before his Houor Mr. Justice Williams: — William Hay Wallace, stealing from the person; John Burgess, obstructing the railway line at Palmerston; Jane White, stealibg from the person; George Anselling, burglary; George Anselling, stealing from a dwelling-house ; James Moon, rape ; William Thomas Salmon, forgery; Timothy Flaherty, alias Matthew Delaney, burglary; Frederick Henke, obstructing the railway line at Palmerston ; William Bower, forgery. The vital statistics tor the quarter ended today were as follows :— January, 145 births; February, 137; March, 131. Total. 413. Deaths— January, 34; February, 47; March, 53. Total, 134. Marriages— January, 43; February, 34; March, 49. Total, 12G. The police have laid an information for arson against William Birtlos for burning down hi* premises at Saddle Hill. There was a rush at tbe registration office, Dunedio, to-day, to have names placed on the electoral roll. The total number of applications was 770, of which Dunedin contributed 327, Roslyn, 299, and Caversham 152.
