A swindler named William Griffis has been arrested in San Francisco for extensive forgeries on the Union Bank of London, in the shape of letters of credit passed on Mr. Baldwin, the mining millionaire, and proprietor of the Baldwin theatre and hotel. The Marquis of Lome was sworn in as Governor-General of the New Dominion at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on tbe 25th ult. Great festivities took place on the occasion. The British ship Thalia, bound from Glasgow to Honolulu, foundered at sea. Part of her crew reached Valparaiso safely. A general strike ot car-drivers has occurred in New York. Mr. Bayard Taylor, traveller and author, formerly United States Minister to Germany, is dead. The cause of death was dropsy. Mr. Curtis, editor of Harper's Weekly, is spoken of as his successor. A mutiny occurred on board the British barque Anaway on her voyage from New York to Trieste. The mate was killed and others wounded. The Captain shot one of the mutineers. Gold was sold at par in New York on the 18th for the first time since the suspension of specie payments in 1862. Gas stock in San Francisco has fallen heavily in consequence of the preparations for the production of the electric light. The Pacific Mail Company have been offered 2,000,000 dollars for two of their China steamers, and 300.000 for one of the Australian steamers. It is believed that this will lead to the withdrawal of the company from the latter route, and to its passing into English hands. Mr. David Cownie, for many years Pacific mail agent at Panama, and also during the existence of the Australian-Panama line, died in Florida on the 26th ultimo.
