WELLINGTON COLLEGE GOVERNORS.

A meeting of the College Governors was held at noon to-day. Present— Messrs. Bunny, Braudon, Buckley, Hutchison, Jackson, aud the Rev. Mr. Paterson. The Secretary (Mr. Graham) reported the state of the accounts. The bauk account was at present overdrawn to the amount of £298, but there was an authorised overdraft of £500. 'lhe copy of a testimonial from Mr. Wilson, Principal of the College, to Mr. Tuckey, who is an apphcaut for the appoiutment of Head Master of Nelson College, was read, and the Secretary was instructed to endorse the same in a comm\nication to be forwarded to the Governors of that College. In compliance with a letter received from the University of New Zealand, a committee consisting of Messrs. Buckley, Jackson, and Patersou were appointed to select examiners to conduct the Christmas examination of the College. The Secretary laid before the Board a record of the results of the colonial class of what are called the Cambridge Local Examinations, and referred to the very creditable position occupied by Wellington College, aud two of the Wellington schools. Out of" the junior boys who had passed their examinations there were three from the College who had passed ; two others had " satisfied" — one from the College and another from the Te Aro Grammar School, of which Mr. Curtis is teacher. Of ».euior boys, only seven from all parts of the province had passedj and two of these came from Wellington College. In the junior girls' examination, only one had passed, and she was also of Wellington. The names appear in another column. He also stated that out of four who had passed an examination for scholarships in the University of Hevr Zealaud, three were from Christchurch, and one, Hell, of Wanganui, from the Welliugton College. a letter was received from Mr. Ingwersen, of the Asylum, with reference to a portion of land which was enclosed as a part of the College grouuds, but which it was desirable should be attached to the Asylum. Mr. Wilson reported that his impression was that it was not a part of the College Reserve, but a part of the Town Belt which had never been appropriated, and a committee was appointed to arrange as to the j removal of the fence which had been erected, ; so as to facilitate the use ot the ground for j Asylum purposes. Mr. Jacksoj: referred to the sums which had been voted for the College by the Provincial Coancil and Parliament, and asked if such were included in the General Government estimates of this session. Messrs. Paterson, Jac'csoj, and Brandon were appoiuted a committee to inquire into the matter. Accounts amounting to £200 13s 3d were presented to be passed for payment. Reference was made to the difference between Mr. Toxward's estimate and the actual cost of work done at the College, and it was agreed to refer the accounts to a Finance Committee, and to Mr. Toxward for his remarks A suggestion which had been made by the Rev. Mr. Paterson, as to the propriety of the tJovernors holding regular meetings, was considered, and on the motion of Mr. Hutchison it was agreed that in future meetings should be held at noon on the first Monday of each month and that special meetings might be called at the instauce of the chairman, or on the requisition of three Governors. Some conversation took place on the subject of the vacations and holidays of the institution. It was suggested by Mr. Hutchison that the system of terms and vacation* was not a suitable one, and that the latter might well be shortened. It wns explained by the Secretary that the Principal had placed himself in communication with other similar institutions throughout the colony, and had endeavored to assimilate the terms to those prevailing elsei where. Mr. Hutchison intimated that he would give notice of a motion ou the subject. The meeting was then adjourned till the first Monday in October.
