FIRE AT MOERAKI. THE RIVERTON FRACAS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) DUNEDIN. 14th February.
A fire has occurred at Culiing's. Moeraki. It is supposed to be . the result of indeudiarism. A special train, with the Hon. Mr. Richardson and Mr. Macandrew, went from Dunedin to Clutha in two hours fifteen minutes. By the opening of the Mauka Creek section. Lawrence will •be brought within four hours' communication of town. The City Council refuse to remove the fever hospital from the town belt at present. The police cases connected with the Riverton railway fracas have been adjourned till the 28th. Four of the defendants who refused to sign recognisances have been committed to the luvercargill gaol. All the Corona's immigrants met with ready employment, the single men at £52 to £70 per annum, and the single women at £26 to £30. In the Herriott Hundred, where the squatters got all the choice sections by spotting the hundred, when the laud was thrown open on deferred payments, of 5000. acres open for application, 1379 acres were applied for in one day. Tho following were the highest scores made by the Invercargill Cadets : — Hare, 52 ; Basstian, 46. The Tuapeka railway is to be opened to Manaka Creek, which is half way to Lawrence, in May next. Ilina De Murska comes by the Albion. Mr. Anderson still is ill. «
