John Wilson, a foreigner, who, when asked to plead guilty to a charge of drunkenness, replied, " Yah, I vas trunk," was fined ss, or 24 hours' imprisonment. He was running madly about the street with £55 in his hand when arrested. George Griffin determined to test the strength of Staples' beer. He did so, and an hour afterwards was found in a recumbent position near the Pier Hotel. Fined 5s and costs, or 24 hours'. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. E. D. Toohill was charged with wantdnly and cruelly injuring a horse. Inspector Naden, A.C., gave evidence to the effect that defendant was working the animal when he was in great pain. Toohill was fined 10s and costs. ASSAULT. A charge of assault preferred against John Dagg, who was arrested a couple of days previouly, was withdrawn by the prosecutor.* "Run 'em- in." S. J. Hill was charged with obstructing the police in the performance of their duty at the cricket ground on the occasion of the Caledonian gathering. Mr. Buckley, who appeared for the defendant, objected to his client appearing, because the summons had not been served on him, but on his wife. Sergeant Monaghan produced the Justices of the Peace Act, the 112 th clause of which provided that, in the absence of the person who was accused, the summons might be left at his residence, wheu it would be considred properly served. His Worship held that the summons had been properly served, and Mr. Buckley applied for a remand for a week. The case was accordingly adjourned till Saturday next. CIVIL CASES. - - G. Edwards v. A. Young— Claim £17 10s. Judgment for defendant with costs.
