THE DUNSTAN ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE EVENING POST. Sir, — It is surprising what misrepresentations the Government party have recourse ' to in order to bolster up a bad and falling cause. The New Zealand Times, of tEe 30th ult.,- contains a telegram from its Dunedin correspondent, stating that " Pyke, as having voted for abolition, was strongly opposed by the Provincial party," and "the league supported Baird, his opponent." The facts of the case are just the reverse. Mr. Pyke was supported by the Provincialists, and Mr. Baird by the Government party, and very hard the latter worked to get their man in. These circumstances are notorious in Dunedin. The Federalists, or Provincialists, have as yet won every seat in Otago, except that for Waikouaiti, and they- were quite strong enough to carry that if they could have found a suitable man" to stand in their interest ; but business and professional men shrunk from the prospect of a six months' session. I am, &c, One who Knows. Dunedin, 3rd January.
