EXAMINATION UNDER FIRE
SOLDIER'S SPLENDID PAPER
The Australian School of Army Education does not allow Japanese shells to interfere with its classes and examinations. Recently an Australian, whio before the war was a university student, sat for his examination in mathematics in the jungle under enemy fire. His seat was an oil drum and his desk a bully-beef box. His paper was one of the best Sydney University ■ had seen for 10 years.
Captain C. Gidley, second in charge., of the land headquarters of the army school, told the story ion his return from New Guinea. "Just before the soldier was given his examination papers Iris unit was called up into battle," he said. "After the action had finished he returned to his make-shift desk and did his papers." . .
Captain Gidley added that 2000 soldiers in New Guinea were takingcorrespondence courses through army education. /The correspondence courses helped prepare them for the bigger fight of getting out of khaki into civilian life again. "We encourage men to think for themselves ,and to discuss problems " said Captain Gidley. "These men want to know wlay so much money can be used to kill and destroy and yet why in 1929 men had to walk the streets looking for ,a job, as I had. If we go. back to a depression we have Sought this war in vain. In Australia we have ,a very poor civil education system. We have been too mean to provide a better one. A few years ago it was computed that Australia spent £6,000,000 on education and £12,000,000 on beer. That was ,a measure of pur national outlook,"
