OBITUARY

MRS W. H. JACKMAN

A former well-known resident of the Ellesmere district, Mrs W. H. Jackman, passed away last week at her home, Rutland street, St. Albans, at the age of 68 years. A daughter of the late Mr Joseph Doyle, who settled in the Ellesmere district in 1867 and after whom Doyleston was named, Mrs Jackman was born at Doyleston and lived there until her marriage to Mr W. H. Jackman about 45 years ago. Their first home was on the Lower Lake road, but after a time they moved to Leeston, where for many years Mr Jackman conducted a very successful butchery business. In this undertaking he had the assistance of his wife, who was a very capable business woman. After disposing of this business Mr Jackman conducted farming and stock dealing operations also with much success. Thirteen years ago Mr Jackman died and soon after his wife settled in Christchurch. Mrs Jackman, who was widely esteemed, leaves a family of three daughters and four sons. The daughters are Mesdames R. A. Hight (Ladbrooks), J. Ramsay (Ashburton) and W. Neil (Auckland), and the sons Messrs S. M. Jackman (Methven), R. W. Jackman (Doyleston), C. J. Jackman (Riccarton) and E. F. Jackman (Australia). Mrs Jackman is also survived by two brothers, Messrs Walter Doyle (Fairlie) and Ernest Doyle (Colac Bay) and by a sister, Mrs McKay (Temuka).

Many old friends attended the funeral on Friday afternoon, the interment taking place at the Ellesmere Cemetery, Leeston, where the service was taken by the Rev. A. O. Harris, a former neighbour of the Jaekman family at Leeston, but now resident in Ohrastchurch. The pall-bearers were Messrs S. M., R. W., and C. J. Jaekman (sons), and Walter Doyle (brother).
