The annual Ellesmere horse fair is to be held at Leeston on Monday, April 7. Entries are now being

taken

The employees of the Islington Freezing Works are to hold their annual picnic at Southbridge Recreation Ground on March 22.

Gunners D. Bryce and R. Mercer, two ex-pupils, visited the Leeston Consolidated School on Friday. They received an enthusiastic welcome from,, the children and the flag was hoisted in honour of the occasion. Best wishes for a safe return were expressed and on the call of one of the senior boys three hearty cheers were given for the soldiers.

There was a brief discussion at the meeting of the Springs-EUes-mere Power Board yesterday, arising out of an application from the Springston unit of the Home Guard made by Mr P. v. Bailey for light on the domain by which to drill at night. The lamps were already there and it was only a matter of supplying current. No funds were provided for this purpose. The chairman (Mr R. T. McIMillan) said that a very difficult question had been opened* up. If the board did as requested for one centre it would have to do so for all the platoons within its area. The chairman invited members to express an opinion as to the board's policy, but no decision was reached.

Entries for next Friday's stock sale at Leeston are advertised today.

Ellesmere County Council announces that it will not purchase eggs of small birds after the end of this week.

For health reasons Mr Arthur Adams has sold his farm at Killinchy and intends to take up a new occupation in the Nelson district. On Monday next, March 17, at 1.30 p.m., the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., will hold a clearing sale of his live and dead stock, particulars of which are advertised today. A useful collection of farm implements, all in good working order, includes a practically new tractor.
