DUNSANDEL SCHOOL

OPENING OF NEW CLASSROOM

VISIT OF MINISTER OF

EDUCATION

For the official opening pf the newly constructed classroonx and staff room at Dunsandel School there was a good attendance of residents to greet the Hon; H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Education.

In introducing the Minister, the chairman of the School Committee, Mr W. J. Wraight, extended a very cordial welcome, mentioning that it was the first official visit of a Minister of the Crown to that district. The erection of the new rooms completed the rebuilding programme necessitated by the destruction of the old school by fire. He expressed pleasure at the presence of Mrs A. N. Grigg, and of Mr C. S. Thompson, a member of the Education Board.

Mrs Grigg, who spoke briefly, said that in such a pleasant environment, the pupils should benefit both physically and mentally. She suggested to the residents that they should keep their time occupied and so have less time to dwell on events

overseas

Mr Thompson expressed the pleasure of the Education Board at being able to provide such a fine school. He added, amid applause, that the grant for a new teacher's residence had been approved by the Education Department and that the building would be proceeded with in the near future.

In the course of his speech the Minister paid a tribute to the people of Canterbury -who had shown the way to the rest of New Zealand in adopting the modern type of open air classroom, which was a great improvement on the older types. He urged the pupils to make the most of their school days and congratulated them on the pleasing appearance of the grounds and gardens. Amid applause, he declared the new rooms open and invited those present to inspect them.

After morning tea had beein served the headmaster, Mr K. G. J. Shrimpton, moved a hearty vote of thanks t6 the Minister for his kindness in making a special visit to Dunsandel to perform the opening ceremony. This brought to a close a very happy function.
