As the Education Board's funds were not sufficient to provide accommodation for all children of school age in the district, it decided not to employ a truant inspector.
Unemployment was reported as increasing in the, Wairarapa district, many workless living on sheep and -cattle runs.
A miner on the West Coast experienced an unusual adventure. He was at work in a tunnel 1400 feet long when he became aware of a wandering cow behind ' him There was no room to squeeze past and nothing for it but to seize the animal by the horns and force it back foot by foot. The 1 cow fortunately seemed to comprehend its plight and after a weary time both biped and quadruped were clear of the drive.
Machinery had so superseded hand work on the grain farms of North West America that it was estimated that the labour of one man would raise enough grain to support 1000 men for a year, while the labour of a second would transport it to market and that of a third prepare it for food.
