Southbridge
MEETING OF TOWN BOARD There were present at the monthly meeting of the Southbridge Town Board held last night, Cmrs E. W. Hunt (in the chair), A. J. Beamsley, H. G. Hubbard, M. H. Boyd and W. G. Hill. Leave of absence was granted to- Cmr. W. J. Galvin ond R. B. Willis. A vote of sympathy was passed with Cmr. Willis in his illness and the wish expressed for a speedy recovery. Mention was .made of the bad state of the Taumutu road due to potholes. The dayman was instructed to patch these, until such times as it was possible to have the road graded. A letter was read from the central committe in control of emergency precautions in which it was asked if the members of the board would act as a sub-committee in Southbridge under the deputy controller to be appointed for Southbridge. - It was pointed out by speakers that as all the work was being done by the,, central special purposes committees there did not seem to be any use for a special sub-committee or for a district sub-controller. Tha district wa3 represented on all the committees already set up. In event of the emergency happening all the work in the district would be centralised at Leeston. It was decided to reply that the members of the board would be willing to co-operate in any way the central committee desired. The committee in charge of publishing the centennial history of Canterbury wrote asking the board to increase its subsidy, towards this cost. The total, amount was £1200 but donations received had fallen short of what was anticipated and £700 only had been received. The board had previously paid £1/0/9, the quota, asked for and agreed to grant another £1. . The works committee was empowered to have the water races in the town district cleaned out. Accounts amounting to £24/14/6 were passed for payment. The credit at the bank was £376/10/2. Mr R. J. Moorhead, a former pupil of the Southbridge School and resident of this district, arrived in New Zealand this week. He has had a very successful career with the New Zealand Shipping Company where he has been for many years, being second refrigerating engineer on the S.S. "Surrey." News has been received by her parents of Sister. Alma Jackman, a former resident of the district, who went to London several years ago to further her nursing studies.
