LETTER TO THE EDITOR

RAISING" OF HOUSE RENT

Sir, —I have been informed that there have been isolated cases in the Ellesmere district where rents; of houses have been advanced without the authority of the -Magistrate's Court. It may not be generally known but the position is that nq house-owner or landlord has any right to ratee rent without this authority; if they do so they make themselves1 liable to a penalty of £50 and a refund of extra rent charged. No owner lias the right to charge any more rent than that in force in May, 1936. For the benefit of those who have been affected in this way I would like to "say that there is a remedy and that is to communicate with the Labour Department, Christchurch, stating the facts of the case and an inspector will do the rest.—l am; etc.,
