ANNUAL MEETING AT LEESTON
At the eighth annual meeting of the Leeston Women's Institute there was a good attendance and Miss N. Doak presided. The roll call was "written suggestion for one afternoon's programme." In opening the meeting Miss Doak welcomed Mrs Dick, district organiser, to the meeting. Several apologies for absence were received. One new member was enrolled and four resignations were accepted, three of the resigning members having joined the Doyleston Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Gorman in her illness and also in the loss of her father. The annual report was presented by the secretary. In the treasurer's absence the balance-sheet was alsp^ presented by the secretary and showing a credit of £3/11/0, which was considered very satisfactory. The social committee's report was given by Mrs Barker. The president thanked all for their support during the year. Winners of trophies for the year were :—Best bloom, Mrs Ramsey 1, Mrs Birkett 2; miscellaneous, Mrs Ramsey 1, Mrs Stewart 2. Mrs Dick expressed pleasure at the report of the year's work and wished the institute success in the ensuing year. She then declared Miss Doak president-elect. As the nominations for the new committee did not exceed the number required they were accepted as read and the officers for the year are:— President, Miss N. Doak; vice-presi-dents, Miss A. Parkin and Mrs W. Martin; secretary, Mrs Redway; treasurer, Mrs W. Smith; trustee, Mrs W. J. Ormandy; general committee, Mesdames J. B. Anderson, J. Smith, J. Jones, W. Cooke, T. J. Ramsey, W. Martin, D. S. Reid, W. Smyth, Sister Hight, and Miss A. Parkin; social committee, Mesdames W. J. Ormandy, E. J. Slattery, F. B. Clausen, J. Sewell, F. Wright, W. Cooke, and A. G. Barker; competition stewards, Mesdames J. Smith and J. Jones; Home and Country agent, Mrs F. Wright; pianist, Mrs Pashby. A number of promises were received of cakes and produce for the returned soldiers' stall on Poppy Day and a number of poppies were sold. Thanks were expressed to The Guardian, to the Brass Band for the use of its hall, and the auditor. The hostesses were Mesdames C. G. Fisher, R. T. Lambie, P. B. Birkett, J. Smith, and J. Jones. Next month's hostesses will be Mesdames E. Hatch, H. Hurford, H. Glasson, R. Gilbert, and Miss E. Jamieson.
