SCHOOL FAIR IN APRIL

After the committee meeting, householders representative of the school district met, with the committee, to further discuss arrangements for the school fair to be held on Friday, March 21. Mr Ridden presided over a good attendance. Several apologies were received. The secretary (Mr G. Stacpoole) jread a letter from Mr A. N. Grigg, M.P., who accepted an invitation to officially open the fair. The time fixed for the opening was 2 p.m. Reporting in regard to the tug-of-war, the convener, Mr W. Si McLaughlin, asked that the names of" Messrs G. W. R. Osborne, Gilbert Bray, and L. C. Lemon should be added to the committee. The chairman reported that he had borrowed the tug-of-war batten from the Springs County Council, also the rope. A suggestion was made by Mr Cartwright that an evening tug-of-war carnival should be held in the Town Hall prior to the date of the fair and that the finals should be decided at the fair. This was referred *to the tug-of-war committee for consideration. It was left to Mr Bray to ask Mr G. Henderson, of the New Zealand

Athletic and Cycling Union, to act as supervisor. Mr Bray's offer of £1 toward the prize-money was accepted with thanks. The chairman secretary, and Messrs Cartwright and Parkin were asked to arrange for outdoor electric lighting. Mrs Cartwright mentioned that the work and sweet stalls had arranged to hold a shop day in Leeston some time before the fair.
