WORLD'S MOTOR VEHICLES
THREE-FOURTHS IN U.S.A
The Department of Commerce in Washington has issued an estimate of the number of motor-vehicles in the world, showing that of 43,078,630 at the beginning of this year, 30,041,----292 were in the United States. Of the 13,037,338 in other countries 39.6 per cent, were of American manufacture. The world total showed an increase of 2,518,463 over the figure at the beginning of 1937. The figures do not include motor-cycles.
In the last 10 years the number of motor-vehicle registrations in the world has risen by 45 per cent., and there is now one motor-car for every 48 persons, compared with one for every 64 ten years ago. The United States has the highest ratio of one car to every 41, persons. Next in order comes Great Britain, Prance, Germany, Canada, and Australia. Liberia has the lowest ratio with one car to every 12,821 inhabitants.
The drive made in the United States this year to dispose of accumulated stocks of second-hand cars has evidently taken effect, for the department notes that stocks of both new and used cars have been reduced almost constantly over the last few months. The department now expects a slow and steady rise in manufacturers' output.
