NEXT YEAR'S DESIGNS

FEWER RUNNING BOARDS

There is a trend toward lower and wider motor-car bodies and the practically complete abandonment of the traditional running board indicated in early surveys of American cars for 1939. In some cases, designers have not been able to overcome completely their longing to retain the running board and there they have retained a vestige of it for the purposes of style contour.

The integral construction of body shell and frame is developing and the gear levers will disappear generally from the floorboards, being replaced either by the stubby type mounted on the dashboard or beneath the steering column. Colourful plastics will be used to a greater extent and one manufacturer, it is said, is contemplating its use for his new radiator grille.
